Aran Valley is surrounded by mountains over 2000 and 3000 meters, a circumstance that determined the almost total isolation of the region during winter season until 1965, when the Vielha tunnel traffic was restored to normal. This geographic feature has kept virtually intact its structure, its landscapes, customs and even their language as they were long ago. All these environmental characteristics grant to the Aran Valley an attractiveness that breaks the winter tourism barrier offering activities the whole year.
Besides being one of the entrances of the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park, the Aran Valley enjoys an excellent gastronomic offer the whole year and offers a wide range of cultural activities, such as museums, the tradition and folklore of its local holidays or the important Romanesque legacy of its churches. (the tourist office offers guided tours of the Romanesque churches).
